Developing ILS Investment & Issuance Strategies and Building Networks with Asian Market Participants & Investors

Dr. Luzi Hitz, explains that one of the key factors in establishing a well diversified insurance linked securities portfolio is to ensure you have a risk profile with uncorrelated perils and uncorrelated territories.
“Investment Linked Securities investments are best viewed in the wider investment context, as they can function as an important mechanism for diversification in such an environment. From this perspective, the diversification within an Investment Linked Securities portfolio becomes less important.” Said Dr. Hitz, the Chief Executive of Perils AG, who will also be speaking at the 3rd Annual Insurance Linked Securities Summit Asia 2011.
But is this investment strategy applicable to Asia where the insurance linked securities market is in a relatively infant stage?
Jean-Michel Paul, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Acheron Capital, believes that while in absolute terms the Asian insurance market is still small, it is rapidly growing. “Not only are the economies behind it growing, but insurance premiums relative to GDP are well ahead of the curve in China and India. The Insurance Linked securities will be the tipping point that at some point will change the global balance in insurance markets and allow for the development of a new global insurance financial center in Asia,” he said.
“There will be a progressive, simultaneous, development of an insurance linked securities investor base in Asia, and the issuance of regional specific risks bonds. This simultaneous growth will create a threshold of expertise which will jump start the Asian insurance industry not only in terms of diversification but also in terms of efficiency. That center will need to prove visionary and pro-active to create the necessary conditions for the take-off to happen as incumbents will only be too happy to prevent such a development,” added Paul, who will also be speaking at the 3rd Annual Insurance Linked Securities Summit Asia 2011.
